The Side Kick
Always Start From the Stance
In executing the side kick, the footbag must first fall to the left or
right of the body. Upon falling, the player will then raise the kicking foot in
a sideways position to meet the footbag. The point of impact should be centered
on the outside of the foot. (Illustration F). The kicking foot has a
parallelism to the balance foot. In the motion, the body always leans laterally
away from the kick. This gives you better vision to see the footbag and also
centers the body's balance. STUDY THE ILLUSTRATIONS ( F, G., H, & I)
because, as the old Chinese proverb goes, "A picture is worth a thousand
words." You can practice this kick by holding the footbag to your side
about chest high then dropping it and kicking it back up until repetition is
mastered. As you practice these kicks try to make a conscious effort to get the
kicking foot UNDER the footbag.

Try to repeat over and over to yourself ,"Watch the footbag."
You cannot kick it if you don't see it. Your first intention is to find the
footbag. Once it is found, then and only then can it be kicked. The footbag
must be watched all the way to your foot. These side kicks are very important
for the continuous movement of Footbag Dance. Wait for the footbag
(Illustration K). The footbag must fall into the kicking range before you
attempt the kick. Obviously if the footbag hits you in the chest you cannot
kick it up there, you must wait for it to come down. This is one of the most
difficult aspects with which to deal. There is a tendency to over-react to the
movement of the footbag. Try to find the right movement and flow with it.
